Family Matters courses Jan 2021

Please see below for a range of resources to help support physical and mental health at home.

The curriculum-linked activities for ages 5-11 cover English and Maths, Health & Wellbeing and Physical Activity, and feature Premier League stars and mascots that will engage them during this challenging time.

Here are a couple of activities that parents and teachers can access already:

Football Fun activity pack A range of fun activity sheets and puzzles covering Maths and English.

Solve, Shoot, Score An interactive football themed game with quick fire maths and spelling questions. Play solo or with the family.

Starting Monday 23rd March I’m going to be hosting a free workout aimed at kids LIVE on my YouTube channel.

With the schools closed and with us all spending more time at home, it’s more important than ever that we keep moving and stay healthy and positive.

Exercise is an amazing tool to help us feel happier, more energised, and more optimistic.

The workouts will be fun and suitable for all ages and even adults can get involved.

You don’t need any equipment, just tune in to my YouTube channel at 9am each morning for a 30-minute, fun workout.

One more thing! I really need your help to spread this message. So please please share this with everyone that might like to get involved, and together we can help keep the nation moving 🏻

We would like to wish you all a very Happy New Year!

Our first week back to school, to begin the New Year has been extremely busy, showing that all our children have returned with a positive Growth Mindset.

The children in KS1 & KS2 have some exciting events planned linked with our whole school topic of “A Moment In Time.” They will get the chance to explore a Planetarium and we are expecting a very special call from Windsor Palace!

The Early Year’s children have come back to school full of energy and have been busy making their very own Stickman! Next week, they are looking forward to putting their cooking skills to the test, in order to make Stickmen Cookies.

We would like to wish our school choir the best of luck in their participation and attendance at the “Young Voices 2020 Concert” held at Sheffield Arena, on Monday 14^th January. Over 2 million young people will be taking part in this concert and we as a school, believe passionately in inspiring the next generation to find their love for music.

Catch Up Flu Clinic

We want to make you aware of the last catch up FLU clinic taking place in York. It is a DROP IN clinic at the Costa Coffee in Haxby, Ryedale Court Shopping Centre, YO32 3SA on Monday 20^th January between 3.30-4.30pm. Parents can take their child/children along if they are still outstanding their flu vaccination. This will be the last clinic in York. Parents do not need an appointment, they can just turn up and they don’t need to bring anything with them.

Save The Children, Change The Future Appeal

This year we collected £56:10 for Save the Children, Change The Future Appeal

Thank you very much for your support. With your help, Save The Children will be able to help change a child’s life. Your donations will help children to grow up healthy and safe, and get an education, so they can grow up to be who they want to be.

Polite Reminder

Please can we remind all parents not to walk through school and take their child to the cloakroom or classroom. As of Monday, there will be a member of staff on each door who will be happy to record messages in a book and pass on to the class teacher. In addition to this, the Co-Heads of school will be on the main gate to also speak with parents. Thank you for your co-operation.

Building Work

You should have already received a letter regarding essential school building work. Classes affected by the building work will receive letters with more specific details for any alternative arrangements. Please be rest assured that your child’s quality of teaching learning will not be affected. However, we are expecting the work to take several months and during this time, the Community Café will not be available for use.

Special Request

Can anyone help?  Does anyone have a spare pressure fit stair gate they no longer use? Or one that school can borrow for the duration of the school building work? If you can help please contact the school office. Thank you.

Haxby Road performed an amazing routine to the song ‘Flashlights’. A huge thank you to Mrs Eddon and Miss Wilkinson for their effort and making sure this event went flawlessly! Well done to the children for behaving so well for the duration of the event and for their exceptional performance. Your performance was full of passion, energy and commitment. You did Yorkshire, Dance and Youth proud.

We hope all our families enjoyed the long bank holiday weekend. This term the school continues to focus on developing the children’s reading fluency, comprehension and enjoyment. The
new library is now complete and the children love using this room to read their favourite books. This term every class teacher will read to their class 6 times a day, from a range of genres to
help support and enhance the children’s love for reading. Please ask your child more about this. Nessgate enjoyed another lovely afternoon at Minster Grange Care Home today showing off their amazing reading skills!

Friends of Haxby Road Update

Soft Toys Wanted! Do you have unwanted soft toys around at home? Please consider donating them to school for the Teddy Tombola at the Summer Fair. They will be washed and won by a lucky new owner! Just bring them to the office as soon as you can, but at least by Monday 10th June. Thank you.

Friends of Haxby Road-AGM-Friday 24th May, 8.45-9.15am, school cafe.

Please come to our Annual General Meeting to hear what the Friends have been up to, and to approve our constitution to become a charity. This will help us get more money to support children in school. It will be a short meeting…with cake!

Internet Safety Day took place on Tuesday 5th February. Internet Safety Day is celebrated globally each year to promote the safe and positive use of digital technology for children and inspire a national conversation. The internet is a wonderful tool to use but there are also risks if not used appropriately. At Haxby Road Academy we learn about the importance of online safety. Social communication on line plays a big part in all our lives, including young people. Please see the links below on how this important subject is being discussed in school and how you can be

Breakfast Club
After half term Breakfast Club must be booked on ParentPay. Please ensure you book your child a place at
least 48 hours in advance. This will allow us to order the correct quantity of food and to allow us to cater for children with allergies. Children should not attend breakfast club unless they have been booked on in advance. Please note that the cost is £2.50 per child, after half-term there will be no discount for siblings.

After School Club
After School Club is becoming very popular so please can you book your child a place 7 days in advance on
ParentPay. Fridays are especially busy so please book your child into the club well in advance. We will not be able to
book children on to After School Club on the day except in exceptional circumstances. Thank you.

Would you like your children to be helpful around the house over half term?
Look out for Smarties tubes and instructions coming home with your child next week.

Non uniform day – Fri 26 Oct
Next Friday, children are invited to wear their own clothes, in return for a bottle contribution for the Fair.
Please bring a full, new, unopened bottle of anything (wine, beer, squash, shampoo, washing up liquid) and it will be collected at the front gate.

World Mental Health Day took place on Wednesday 10th October. In school the children took part in simple activities to improve and maintain their own wellbeing.
We explained to the children that mental health is just like physical health. Everyone has it and we need to take care of it.  The children learnt that mental health describes
how you are feeling and how well you can cope with day to day life. The teachers shared some great tips for looking after their wellbeing. Key Stage 1 children enjoyed quiet
time in the outside environment and learnt breathing techniques to help them relax. Please talk to your child/children about the techniques they learnt. It’s really important to make time to look after yourself. Try and put your feet up tonight when your children are in bed and relax.

Exciting News

Read all about it….Mrs McQuade has been given the exciting opportunity to represent the Ebor Academy Trust on a visit to Shanghai. She will be learning about how maths is taught there and will be able to bring back lots of great ideas to try in school. Miss Ramsay and Mrs Gibson will be teaching the class while she is away. We can’t wait for Mrs McQuade to share her new ideas with the school and help improve how we deliver mathematics across school.

Reception Inspire Afternoon

On Monday 15th October at 3.15pm Miss Wilkinson will be delivering fun and active Reading and Phonics games to all the parents and carers. It would be great to
see all our Reception families at the event as the games will really help you support your child with learning to read at home. We look forward to seeing you there.

A message from the Head of School…

This week the children have all been busy learning about their class ‘street name’. Each class is named after a street in York and as part of our Haxby 100 entitlement all children visit their new street at the start of term. This week Year 4 went to visit Fossgate and learnt all about its history and features. The children thoroughly enjoyed their day.
Every Friday we have an early years group running in the 4Family Café. Parents with children under the age of 2 are invited to the café to take part in exciting learning experiences with their child/children. This week was ‘messy play’. The children had a wonderful time exploring the spaghetti and getting very messy. We would love to see more of our families at this event. Please see Ms Martin or Mrs Huggins to talk about this.

Early Years Open Day

Miss Wilkinson would like to invite any families with children under 5 to our Early Years Open Day. This will be a chance for families to look around the setting and ask questions. If you know families with children ready to start Reception in September 2019, please encourage them to come and visit our excellent setting.
